The thought of having an electric fireplace just came to me a few weeks ago when I visited an office that had one in their reception room. It looked great and when it was turned on, actually produced heat. So if you have a room in your house where you would love to install a fireplace, where a gas or wood burning would be inconvenient, think about electric! For me, it was my breakfast room. I wanted to make it cozy to enjoy a cup of coffee on those cold winter mornings.
Most electric fireplaces can simply be plugged in and are ready for operation. They are tested in order to meet UL standards and to avoid problems with overheating, they are specially designed with automatic shut off features. In addition to the convenience, ease of operation, and overall effect, electric fireplaces are extremely inexpensive. Typically, they cost 3 cents per hour if using only the flames and 8 cents per hour with the heater. The electric fireplace comes with a thermostat that you can set, which also helps save on operating cost. Keep in mind that the energy being supplied to the fireplace is converted into heat for the room, which means this type of fireplace is 100% efficient over other types of fireplaces that run on average 80% efficiency. Most models provide supplemental heat for up to 400 sq. ft. And some models come with an air treatment system.
Another great feature is that they are designed to look exactly like a normal, woodburning fireplace. The evolution is amazing where the logs mimic the look of real flames. It creates a warm, inviting atmosphere to the room. Depending on where you purchase the logs, you can find some that offer random flames, creating an amazing illusion of real fire.
The selection of models range from the "old woodstove" look to more modern and formal designs. You can select wood, marble or brick surrounds to fit the style of your room.
When I decided to buy one, I went to Salter's Fireplace, Patio & Grill, which is located at 3130 W. Ridge Pike in Eagleville. Jay Stong, the owner, helped me to select a model that was right for the space I had and a design that would fit into the décor of my room.
So, this winter, I plan to sit in my breakfast room a little more and enjoy my charming new electric fireplace. |
