Rough, dry, cracked and often painful skin goes along with the first blistery wind of the cold winter months. During this time of year, we struggle to keep some vitality and moisture in our skin. The low humidity can damage the skin, not only making it dry and flaky, but cause premature aging. Here are some things that you can do during the Winter months to keep your skin safe and warm.
In the Home
Central air can contribute to "winter skin." Try using a humidifier at night.
In the Bathroom
Although we love those long hot baths, they are not recommended during the winter. Instead take short quick showers using a moisturizing body wash or bar. Literally, as soon as you dry off, it is important that you lotion using lipid rich cream that will hold in moisture and protect your skin from the harsh climates.
For the Face
Your face is attacked by the wind more than anything else, so it is the most crucial to care for these winter months. You should not wash it more than twice a day to avoid drying it out. You can exfoliate your skin because it helps to wash away dead cells so your skin can absorb more moisture, however, less is better in the Winter. The key is to keep your skin moisturized and be gentle with it.
Outdoors
We have tucked away the warmth of the July sun, but that does not mean that the its harmful UV rays have left for the winter. Continue to use sunscreen, preferably SPF 15 or higher. This goes the same for lip balm. Dress warmly for the weather, creating another barrier between you and the wind.
Until the first signs of spring, our skin will suffer through the regiments of cold weather treatment. But with these regiments, a brighter summer will arise through healthier more vibrant skin. |
