Think Prime Rib - juicy, tender, the epitome of beef. But that's not where we started. First you choose from the luscious array of starters ($6-9). We chose the Three Cheese Crab Dip and the Crispy Chicken Spring Rolls. The cheeses here served to showcase the clean flavor of lump crabmeat. The Spring Rolls had a bite of spice, contrasted with the cool sour cream. Two in our party selected soups for starters. One said that she would come back just for the French Onion - chunks of onion with some bite to them, a soft crouton soaking in the broth, generously topped with three different cheeses. One of the night's specials was Chicken and Roasted Poblano soup with sweet, crunchy beans and corn. This is what Corn Chowder is when it's grown up.
Savvy diners select the salad bar along with their entrees. We were impressed with the variety of selections - fresh veggies, marinated peppers and mushrooms, real bread croutons, even liver pate. Two of our tasters were still talking about the salad bar even as we were leaving.
Now it's time for the Prime Rib. The beef was perfect, flossed with roasted garlic sauce and bits of toasted onion ($17). I had to fight my fellow diners off with my fork. The flaky tilapia, with a creamy sweet lobster filling, floated in a light buttery sauce. A rack of baby back ribs ($17) came slathered with an incredible tangy sauce that was just sweet enough to balance the meat. The green bean side dish was crisp, flavorful, and really good. Another of us had sweet potato fries that the rest of us kept snitching.
When the desserts came, the favorites at our table were the Chocolate Chip Cheesecake (a special), closely followed by the mile-high Carrot and Chocolate Cakes.
Charlie Brown's management has purposefully created a relaxing, home-like atmosphere. This is complemented by the excellence of their attentive and knowledgeable waitstaff. We were impressed by their dedication to their customers.
After thoroughly enjoying our evening at Charlie Brown's, all we can say is "Move over, Outback, we're going to Charlie Brown's."
