Double Lives: American Painters as Illustrators, 1850-1950. This exhibition and its accompanying catalogue explores the often uneasy relationship between the art of easel painting and the art of illustration. It focuses on artists who were an important part of the history of the narrative tradition in American culture and who practiced both easel painting and illustration in the years between 1850 and 1950. Among the artists represented are Winslow Homer, N.C. Wyeth, Frederick Remington, John Sloan, Grant Wood, and Rockwell Kent. |

Chester County Craftsmanship. The decorative arts gallery features the distinctive regional furniture produced in this county from its European settlement in the 1680s to the 1820s. The alcoves, which include architectural woodwork from several area houses, hold fine examples of spice boxes, chests of drawers and wainscot furniture. The alcoves also include furniture decorated with the regionally unique line and berry inlay design attributed to the Welsh artisans who settled here in the 1700s. Outstanding tall-case clocks made in the county are a particular attraction for anyone intrigued by technology and local craft traditions. |

Works by Alfred J. Munnings. A British artist, Munnings was one of the most highly regarded horse painters of the first half of the twentieth century, renowned for his Impressionistic racetrack and foxhunting scenes and for his equestrian portraits. This is the first exhibition to focus solely on the work of Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner and their influence on the silversmith trade. Fletcher & Gardiner were the premier silversmiths of their time, renowned for their dramatic presentation pieces for civic and military heroes as well as stylish household silver and jewelry. The exhibition will include a selection of swords, medals, commemorative works, tea sets, pitchers, dinner services, a candelabrum, vases, and flatware in silver and gold. |

GardenFair. This garden extravaganza celebrates The Artist & Gardener. More than 80 vendors will be on hand to offer an incomparable selection of uncommon plants and exceptional garden-themed merchandise. Antiques in Bloom, a special display of floral arrangements inspired by objects in the museum collection will be featured in the museum's Galleries. The floral arrangements will borrow from the forms, colors, and lines of the elegant antiques on display in Winterthur's Galleries and will create a horticultural homage to the beauty of American decorative arts. |
