Bistro Cassis has it all - a lush idyllic setting - patio dining in season, a sophisticated and intriguing menu, and casual ambience for those days when you'd rather leave your tie at the office.
We chatted with Maria Dahrouch, one of the proprietors. Serene and graceful, she spoke of her passion for creating a space where people could relax, enjoy exceptional food, and even bring their families if they like. Her husband and partner, Abde, brings a lively Mediterranean twist to traditional French cuisine.
At Bistro Cassis you can order from either the Bistro menu or the Bistro's more formal sibling, Pond. We enjoyed perusing both menus, and our meal reflected this.
The Ragout of Wild Mushrooms was a triumph - a generous portion of meaty mushrooms in a buttery sauce - "rich, luscious, dreamy" according to one taster. Other appetizers ($8-18) included a Hubbard Squash Soup that was full-bodied and toasty, perfect for the season, and a Beet Carpaccio - cubes of tender beets with a light, slightly tangy dressing.
Lamb chops were delightfully light yet meaty chops faultlessly cooked in a tomato-based sauce. Swordfish was moist and flavorful, expertly spiced and served over lentils. The Pasta with White Clam Sauce, one of the day's specials, was a bowl so full of clams that the pasta wasn't initially visible. The sauce was wonderfully garlicky.
The other special of the day was Filet "Rossini" - grilled filet mignon topped with seared foie gras and mushrooms in a red wine reduction sauce. The grain of the meat, silky foie gras, and earthy mushrooms sang an aria on the tongue. (Entrees $26-29)
Our desserts ($6-9) included Floating Island, Chocolate Crunch mousse, Lemongrass Ice Cream, and an Apple Torte. Each was more amazing than the last.
Prix Fixe menus ($30, $45 with paired wines) are also available.
We spent a delightful evening at Bistro Cassis, and eagerly look forward to returning.
